Yes, you can. Search for the "Handbrake" application. There are several youtube tutorials on how to copy and compress your DVDs and make them available in iTunes for you to copy to your iPhone.

Technically illegal as you would be breaking the copyright on the DVD. These days you can buy new dvds that come with an electronic copy you can install on your ipod/iphone but these do cost a bit more.

It is, but you would have to convert them to the proper format. Just pop in the disk to your computer, and go to My Computer. Try copying the DVD to some folder. When that's done, go to iTunes and add folder to your movies. Select the folder, and it'll show up on iTunes. Left click it and convert it(which will take hours), and then it's ready to sync.
